RANDy - A True-Random Generator Based On Radioactive Decay
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents a physical random number generator for mainly cryptographical applications based on alpha decay of Americium 241. A simple and low-cost implementation is shown to detect the decay events of a radioactive source often found in common household smoke detectors. Three different algorithms for the extraction of random bits from the exponentially distributed impulses are discussed. In the concrete application a speed optimized method was chosen to gain a reasonable high data rate from a moderate radiation source (0,1 μCi). To the author’s best knowledge this technique has not been applied so far in the context of radiation-based random generators. A tentative application of statistical suits of tests indicates a high quality of the data delivered by the device.

Random numbers are useful for a variety of purposes, such as generating data encryption keys, simulating and modeling complex phenomena and for selecting random samples from larger data sets. They have also been used aesthetically, for example in literature and music, and are of course ever popular for games and gambling. When discussing single numbers, a random number is one that is drawn from...
متن کاملCPU Time Jitter Based Non-Physical True Random Number Generator
Today’s operating systems provide non-physical true random number generators which are based on hardware events. With the advent of virtualization and the ever growing need of more high-quality entropy, these random number generators reach their limits. Additional sources of entropy must be opened up. This document introduces an entropy source based on CPU execution time jitter. The design and ...
متن کاملOccupancy Numbers in Testing Random Number Generators
The classical occupancy problem where n balls are placed in N cells is used for testing of random number generators. We show that the statistics of appropriately chosen occupancy numbers are incompatible with the statistics of many pseudorandom number generators (PRNGs) even if they are truncated. More than that, the incompatibility shows up on relatively small samples long before the period of...
متن کاملCompact FPGA-based True and Pseudo Random Number Generators
Two FPGA based implementations of random number generators intended for embedded cryptographic applications are presented. The first is a true random number generator (TRNG) which employs oscillator phase noise, and the second is a bit serial implementation of a Blum Blum Shub (BBS) pseudorandom number generator (PRNG). Both designs are extremely compact and can be implemented on any FPGA or PL...
